West River Head Start
In order to address the national and state trend of childhood obesity, West River Head Start initiated the Nutrition Committee in the fall of 2006. This committee is led by the Health Coordinator and made up of staff, school cooks, community members and most importantly, Head Start parents.
The mission of this committee is to provide staff guidance, educate families and children, role model healthy eating, and provide interesting and balanced menus. The committee meets twice each school year in the fall and spring. All families are welcomed and encouraged to be part of this committee.

*Review of Minutes from spring meeting
*Reviewed Current BMI results
We are currently in the process of computing the BMI’s for this fall. So far with the classes computed we are sitting around where we have been sitting in the past. As soon as we get all the kids computed we will share the results. We are using Child Plus this year to calculate the BMI results. It doesn’t do a group evaluation so Barb said she would make a graph with the results that Vicky shares with her.
*Reviewed USDA guidelines and requirements
Handouts on the USDA guideline requirements for meals and serving sizes were handed out to staff for each center and reviewed.
We discussed how meals are going in our classrooms. No concerns are noted at this time with meals.
Discussion was had on the new USDA rules for CACFP. The new rules begin October 1
. We met with all of our school kitchens regarding the new requirements.
We talked made up recipe cards that are centered around the new requirements. They are to help staff know what is required for each meal and snack. We also gave each center info on how to figure out sugar content of yogurt and cereal.
